Backyard Golf Practice: A Simple Safety Checklist

Backyard practice can make it easier to work on contact, tempo and routine—but convenience should never replace preparation.

Before every session, inspect the equipment and the surrounding area. Conditions can change between uses: anchors loosen, weather moves the frame, netting wears and people or objects enter the practice zone.

Use the following checklist as a starting point, together with the instructions supplied with your equipment.

1. Confirm the location

The practice cage or net should stand on a suitable level surface with the clearance specified by the manufacturer. Check the full area around, above and behind the setup.

Consider what could happen if a ball misses the target, escapes the net or rebounds unexpectedly. The potential path should not lead toward people, neighbouring property, windows, vehicles, roads or walkways.

Never position a net where another person could unknowingly walk behind it.

2. Check the weather

Do not use a large netted structure in strong wind, thunderstorms or other unsafe conditions. Wind places force on the net and frame, even when the equipment appears stable.

Outdoor equipment should be stored or secured exactly as described by the manufacturer. Wet or icy surfaces can also affect footing and frame stability.

3. Inspect the frame

Walk around the entire structure. Confirm that each connection is fully seated and every required fastener, support and anchor is in place.

Look for bent, cracked, loose or corroded parts. Stop using the equipment if any structural component appears damaged or does not fit securely.

4. Inspect the netting

Examine the impact area, side panels, roof panel and lower edges. Small holes can grow quickly under repeated golf-ball impact.

Check seams, loops, straps and attachment points. The net should be positioned according to the instructions, without unexpected gaps around the frame.

Replace damaged or excessively worn netting before continuing practice.

5. Check the target

Confirm that the impact target is centred, correctly attached and able to absorb the ball as designed. A target pulled too tightly may increase rebound. One that is loose or incorrectly positioned may expose the main net to unnecessary wear.

Begin each session with a controlled shot and observe how the ball and target respond.

6. Stabilize the hitting surface

The hitting mat must lie flat and remain stable during the swing. Remove stones, water, leaves and other debris from underneath and around it.

Wear footwear that provides appropriate grip for the surface. Stop if the stance area becomes wet, icy or unstable.

7. Clear the practice zone

Before every shot, confirm that people and pets are outside the entire area. Remove loose objects, garden tools and breakable items.

Only one golfer should use the hitting position at a time. Anyone observing should remain in a designated location behind and away from the swing path.

8. Use controlled progression

Start with a short club and controlled speed. Observe the frame, net and rebound before progressing to longer clubs or faster swings.

Do not use clubs, balls or swing speeds outside the product’s stated limits.

The 30-second check before every session

  • Weather conditions are suitable.
  • Frame and anchors are secure.
  • Net and target show no damage.
  • Mat and footing are stable.
  • Required clearance is open.
  • People, pets and property are protected.

Responsible preparation takes less time than repairing damage or responding to an injury. Make the safety check part of the practice routine, not something reserved for the first installation.
